Every year, on the second Monday of October (Japan’s national holiday, Sports Day), the Takadanobaba Yabusame (Horseback Archery) event is held in the Hakoneyama area of Toyama Park, Tokyo.
In 1988, it was designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Shinjuku City and is now open to the public only once a year.
What is Yabusame?
Yabusame is a traditional Japanese ritual in which an archer rides at full speed along an approximately 200-meter track, shooting arrows at three targets.
Visitors can experience the excitement of horses galloping right before their eyes, making this a fascinating traditional cultural event for families with children as well.
If your travel dates happen to coincide with this event, we highly recommend visiting the venue and experiencing the unique atmosphere and beauty of this traditional Japanese ritual.
